Xerocambos Beach, located in the lesser-visited south eastern part of Crete, has white silky sands and clear waters – making it the perfect place for tourists to spend a day in the sunshine

Crete is the largest and most populous of the Greek islands, the 88th largest island in the world and the fifth largest island in the Mediterranean Sea, after Sicily, Sardinia, Cyprus, and Corsica. It bounds the southern border of the Aegean sea.

The arrival of summer has Brits itching for a sunny getaway, and Greece remains a top choice. But there’s one secret treasure yet to be fully discovered by tourists. Tucked away in Crete’s less travelled south eastern coast lies the stunning Xerocambos Beach, boasting the longest stretch of sand in the Med.

With its glistening white sands and crystal-clear waters, it is an idyllic spot for soaking up the sun. Not only does the beach offer tranquil beauty, but it’s surrounded by fascinating caves and a scenic bay perfect for picnicking – all set against a striking mountainous backdrop.

Adventurous holidaymakers are warned, though; Xerocambos doesn’t come easy. The remote paradise requires negotiating serpentine roads leading off the beaten path.

Time Out recommends routing from Sitia to the quaint village of Armeni before braving what’s dubbed Greece’s “scariest” road—a hair-raising drive along a deep chasm – to reach these secluded bays.

Once at Xerocambos, visitors can relax with local hospitality at charming tavernas and welcoming guesthouses like Akti Rooms, applauded by TripAdvisor as one of the prime spots just a stone’s throw from the beach, reports the Express.

Xerocambos beach has been showered with praises on TripAdvisor, with one visitor raving: “Very good beach with sunbeds for free, I only paid 3 euros for my coffee, fantastic scenery, wonderful sea! I recommend this beach!”

Another fan gushed: “The beach is a hidden paradise with breathtaking panoramic views. Clean water is ideal for swimming. The ideal destination for those seeking peace and natural beauty.”

A third shared their experience, noting: “Fabulous views and interesting watching the coming and going of the yachts, the fishing boats bringing in their catch and it going straight into the kitchen of the lovely beach side taverna Aloni.

“There are a couple of other tavernas too.”

They continued: “Changing cubicle and shower on the beach and some sun beds free to use if you have a drink or some food at the tavernas.

“You can get here on the quirky local bus with its distinctive tootle horn which sounds all along the route, a treat not to be missed! Well worth a visit, you too may fall under its spell!”.
