ITV is resurrecting one of its most beloved sitcoms – bringing Benidorm back to screens eight years after it was abruptly cancelled. The Spanish set, expat themed comedy series first burst onto screens in 2007 and ran for ten seasons and 74 episodes before network bosses cancelled the sun-soaked show.

The series was a ratings hit for ITV, pulling in over eight million viewers and winning an army of fans. A List stars made unexpected appearances on the show – with Dame Joan Collins and late Will and Grace star Leslie Jordan among those taking roles in the comedy show.

Benidorm spawn a hugely success live stage adaptation that thrilled audiences in 2018 and 2019, and scooped numerous National Television Awards and TV Choice Awards – and was even BAFTA nominated. Show creator Derren Litten has long commented that he would love to bring the series back for more episodes.

And it appears that plans are afoot for the show to be revived – with even a cast member declaring that it will be back. Sherrie Hewson, who played hotel manager Joyce Temple-Savage in the series, declared in a recent podcast interview: “Benidorm is coming back.”

A source has told The Sun: “Benidorm was adored by millions when it was suddenly cancelled. Fans will be thrilled to hear ITV wants to bring it back. An 11th series hasn’t been commissioned yet, but there’s major excitement building as early talks begin.

“Producers have started to reach out to the show’s stars and are hopeful a decision can be made later this year.” The Mirror has approached ITV for comment.

In 2023, show creator Derren Litten revealed he had ideas for countless new episodes – and sent fans into a tailspin during an online Q&A. Taking to X, one fan asked the screenwriter: “Would be great to see new episodes… Derren Litten surely living in Benners you have plenty of stories you could pen.” The man himself said: “I don’t live in Benidorm but I live fairly close by,.”

But then he went on to tease: “I have more stories for another 74 episodes; if ITV wants them, they know where I am!” Benidorm fans were quick to react to his message – and began begging him, ITV and even Netflix to make his suggestion become a reality.

One fan posted: “Please, please, please do more.” A second added: “Someone better give the people what they want.” While another suggested a new cast of characters could be created, writing: “Benidorm: The Next Generation.”

Sherrie Hewson also raised hopes among fans last year when she was asked about the possibility of reprising her role as Joyce Temple-Savage. Again on X, one fan asked: “Will there be another series of Benidorm, Joyce?” And she wrote back to declare: “Never say never.”

Fans had also hoped that Derren would write new episodes when he revealed in 2024 that he was coming out of retirement. He said in an online statement: The TV writer said: “It’s been a difficult decision but I’ve decided to return back to writing for both television and theatre.

“I have had clear, recent indications that certain TV channels are interested in my decision and I hope you will be watching the fruits of my labour in time to come. Obviously there are always rumours surrounding such announcements but I would like to make it clear my decision to come out of retirement is purely to spend less time with my family.”

His comments spurred fan speculation that the show would be back, with one writing in response at the time: “Rumours that Benidorm is coming back is making my heart so happy.” While another typed: “Another series of BENIDORM ???? Please lets manifest that this is real.”
