Netflix’s true-crime documentary, Gone Girls: The Long Island Serial Killer, has officially become the most-watched series on the streaming platform across the world
The Stephen Graham drama, Adolescence, quickly climbed to the top of Netflix’s most-watched shows worldwide following its release on March 13.
However, this week it was dethroned by a new true crime documentary on Netflix UK, titled Gone Girls: The Long Island Serial Killer.
This three-part documentary delves into the stories of young women involved in the sex industry in New York City and Long Island who mysteriously vanished, leaving their families in a desperate search for answers.
In 2010, female remains were discovered in the Gilgo Beach area of Long Island, leading to a series of chilling discoveries.
The synopsis further reveals: “Despite all of this, the case of the ‘Long Island serial killer’ remained unsolved for 13 years – until July 2023, when a major break came after corruption was rooted out within the police responsible for the case.”
Currently, the documentary holds the number one spot on Netflix UK and the second spot on Netflix US, with WWE Raw claiming the top position.
Earlier this week, on April 1, it was reported that Adolescence had made it into the all-time top 10 for Netflix’s most-watched series ever.
The gripping drama surpassed the third season of Stranger Things and the second of Bridgerton on the chart.
The intense series has been made available for free viewing in schools, with Prime Minister Kier Starmer confessing to the creators that he found it “really hard to watch” with his teenage children.
Actor Stephen Graham expressed surprise at the show’s success, especially as it marked his debut as a writer.
The show has become a Netflix sensation, setting new records with an incredible 24.3 million viewers globally within just four days of its release.
Fans are eagerly anticipating news of a second season and, in a chat with Variety, the creator hinted: “Possibly, let’s see how the figures are. But yeah, there’s the possibility of developing another story.”
Given the impressive viewing stats, it seems increasingly likely that another season could be on the horizon.
