Martin Clunes, who portrayed Tony Smart in Men Behaving Badly, has opened up about the future of the show
Men Behaving Badly star Martin Clunes has spilled the beans on why a revival of the iconic 90s comedy might not hit the mark today, suggesting that ‘the world has changed’.
The 63-year-old actor, who became a household name as Gary Strang alongside Neil Morrissey’s Tony Smart, reflected on their roles as the beer-loving flatmates. The duo was joined by Leslie Ash and Caroline Quentin, who portrayed their long-suffering partners, Debs and Dorothy.
Clunes has candidly expressed his thoughts about the show’s potential reception with modern viewers, admitting to Radio Times that “if you say something inappropriate, that’s you finished.”
He elaborated on the challenges of bringing back Men Behaving Badly, saying: “The world has changed. Social media has made journalists of everyone. There’s no nuance left, everything is polarised.”
Adding to the conversation, Clunes remarked: “Most of what we said was inappropriate, but it was funny because we’d said it. Whereas now, if you say something inappropriate, that’s you finished, because this panel of judge-journalists on social media will have your guts for garters.”
However, Morrissey seems more open to the idea of a comeback, hinting at a possible return if the conditions are right: “If [writer] Simon Nye suddenly comes up with something that makes Martin and I go, ‘You know what, he’s done it again,’ then we would consider it.”
This revelation follows the exciting news that Clunes and Morrissey have teamed up once more after 27 years, embarking on a travel series that takes them on an adventure through France, where Morrissey now resides.
The comedy pair have hit the road for a tempting travelogue titled Neil and Martin’s Bon Voyage, airing on Gold.
Setting off from Normandy and meandering their way through the picturesque Alps to reach Neil’s charming residence and cider apple orchard situated in the southern French region, the three-part series offers a taste of exquisite French cuisine, breath-taking views and enticing local traditions.
Rekindling memories and reflecting on their 30-year camaraderie that spans across both their careers and personal lives, they’ve enjoyed rediscovering each other’s company.
Featuring on The One Show, the two jested about their adventures, confessing it was “great” to reconnect during the shoot, albeit with a playful jab that “the camera crew got in the way of what was a really good holiday”.
In answering the question about their experience working together again, their response was unanimous: “great”. Neil offered further insight, stating: “It was a great excuse actually to hang out, because we haven’t hung out with each other.”
Neil and Martin’s Bon Voyage is available on U&Gold, via the U app on Sky Glass, Sky Stream and Sky Go.
