New research has revealed the safest and most dangerous countries to visit in 2025.

A study conducted by Numbeo has revealed a tiny European county of Andorra to be the safest in the world, whilst the UK and US both scored poorly.

Andorra, a landlocked principality situated in the Pyrenees mountain range between Spain and France, scored 84.7 out of 100. The tiny country spanning 468 square kilometres is almost entirely geared towards tourism. The country boasts tax-free shopping and an expanding selection of ski resorts. In addition, the country has a strong economy, virtually no crime and the world’s second highest life expectancy.

However, not so much can be said for the UK and US, which scored 87th and 89th on the list, respectively. In total, the UK scored just 51.7 out of 100, and the US trailed behind, barely making it past the 50 per cent mark, with a mark of 50.8. Pickpocketing, which is often a crime that targets tourists in destination hotspots and city attractions, was worst in London in the UK last year, with the country’s top 10 pickpocket hotspots all being in London.

The Westminster City Council area in central London was the worst area for pickpockets in the country, with 13,320 reports per 100,000 people, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS). Despite this, the two nations still ranked higher than many other countries.

According to Numbeo’s findings, Venezuela is the world’s most dangerous country, after ranking 146th out of 146 countries and scoring just 19.3 out of 100 on the index. Venezuela is a South American nation and shares borders with Colombia and Guyana. The country was noted for its violent crime, economic and political instability, corruption and the presence of criminal and terrorist groups.

As of June 2024, over 7.7 million Venezuelans have left the country since 2014 due to years of hyperinflation, corruption, economic mismanagement, and a lack of economic diversification. Papua New Guinea was not far behind Venezuela, scoring just slightly higher with 19.7 out of 100. Haiti ranked third worst with a slightly higher score of 21.2 and Afghanistan came fourth with a score of 24.9.

A number other nations in the Middle East and Asia found their way into the top spots, including United Arab Emirates (UAE), Qatar, Taiwan and Oman — followed by the Isle of Man in sixth place. The UAE ranked second with a score of 84.5. The country is renowned for its strict laws, tough police and a zero-tolerance policy towards crime. Qatar came in third with a score of 84.2 and Taiwan ranked fourth with a score of 82.9.

The safety index takes into account survey responses about how safe residents and visitors feel while walking during the day and night, as well as reports of homicide, muggings, robbery, sexual and physical attacks, harassment, discrimination, property crimes and other crimes.
