Former Labour MP Mike Amesbury appeared on Good Morning Britain to discuss his assault conviction after punching a man five times during a night out.

Former Labour MP Mike Amesbury has opened up about his assault conviction in a fresh interview on Good Morning Britain.

Chatting with Susanna Reid and Richard Madeley on the ITV show on Monday, 24 March, Mike discussed his stint in prison and stepping down from his parliamentary seat after admitting to common assault earlier this year.

The former MP assaulted Paul Fellows by punching him five times in the early hours of 26 October 2024 after a night of drinking.

Mike received a ten-week suspended sentence for two years and was instructed to carry out 200 hours of unpaid work.

However, in his first live TV appearance since the incident, Mike confessed he was “living a nightmare” and extended a public apology to both Paul’s family and his own.

The ex-MP stated: “It’s a living nightmare, but it’s a nightmare that I created. I obviously pleaded guilty at the first stage in the legal process. I own that. So, I’m being punished, and rightfully so,” reports the Manchester Evening News.

When questioned about what triggered the attack, Mike mentioned experiencing a “tough time” following the Labour Party’s rise to power last year.

“I’ll add some context, certainly not excuses. It had been a tough time in Parliament. Ironically, since we – I say ‘we’, but I’m no longer a member of the Labour Party – entered Government,” the 55-year-old explained.

He also added: “I did feel personally threatened at that time, and I made an instantaneous judgement call which was wrong. I should have walked away.”#

During his appearance on GMB, Mike publicly apologised to his victim and his family. He said: “Once again, I will publicly apologise to Mr Fellows and his family. Very importantly, my family as well, because it’s affected them. My former constituents, my neighbours and friends, I live in the community still. And, parliamentary colleagues as well, who have been very kind about me.”

He has been instructed to participate in an alcohol monitoring programme, attend an anger management course, and complete 20 days of rehabilitation work. He showed off his ‘alcohol tag’ on GMB, which he is required to wear for 120 days, and announced his intention to stay sober in the future.

Mike is no longer affiliated with the Labour Party. He last served as the Independent MP for Runcorn and Helsby before officially leaving the Commons on 17 March.
