The City Is Ours lands on BBC on Sunday, with James Nelson Joyce starring in the main role as Michael Kavanagh, and he’ll be joined alongside a star-studded cast
New BBC crime drama This City is Ours is set to hit screens on Sunday – with a star studded cast. The show, penned by Stephen Butchard, explores a gangsters attempts to start a family at the same time as his criminal empire disintegrates. The drama is set and filmed in Liverpool, with some parts of filming taking place in Spain.
The series focuses on the story of Michael, a man who has been involved in organised crime all his life. However, for the first time in his life Michael is in love. The show focuses on Michael and Diana’s love affair, set against the disintegration of Michael’s crime gang.
For years, Michael and Ronnie have been been bringing cocaine into the City and beyond. However, when a shipment goes missing they know the Kingdom is under attack…
But who will be starring in the highly anticipated drama? From Game of Thrones to Outlander stars, here’s who viewers can expect to see on their screens…
Playing the leading role of Michael Kavanagh is James Nelson-Joyce, known for his roles in Little Boy Blue and Time. Gang boss Ronnie Phelan is played Sean Bean, known for his role as Ned Stark in the HBO fantasy drama Game of Thrones.
Derry Girls star Saoirse-Monica Jackson will be playing the role of Cheryl Crawford whereas Darci Shaw will star as Melissa Phelan. Outlander star Stephen Walters will also make an appearance, playing Davy Crawford. Kevin Harvey will also appear as Bobby Duffy.
Also joining the cast are Gavin and Stacey star Laura Aikman, Indiana Jones star Hannah Onslow, as Michael’s love interest Diana, and Waterloo Road star Jack McMullen as Jamie Phelan. Shetland star Julie Graham will also be joining the Phelan family, as Elaine.
It’s not the first time some of the star studded cast have worked together, as Sean said ahead of the release: “There was great camaraderie, individually and collectively. I have been fortunate to work with some of the lads before, and (writer) Stephen Butchard is someone I hugely respect and admire.
“I can promise fans of crime dramas that this series takes it to another level,” he continued.
“That is what appealed to me when I first read the scripts. By page nine I knew I wanted to be Ronnie. He is someone eyeing up retirement, just as a rival gang organisation are preparing to attack.”
It was a no brainer for James, who knew he wanted to be in the show straight away. “I knew I wanted to be in it straight away. I can honestly say it’s been an honour, and I’m not using that word lightly. I felt privileged to be offered a part in something that I really wanted to be a part of. And I really wanted to do it justice,” he said.
This City Is Ours will arrive on our screens on Sunday March 23. The show will land on iPlayer first at 6am and air on BBC One at 9pm.
