BBC Breakfast: Jamie Laing emotional as he speaks about challenge
TV star Jamie Laing got emotional as he admitted he was ‘really struggling’ following his epic Comic Relief run.
Over the past week, BBC Radio 1 star Jamie Laing has been on a gruelling charity challenge to raise money for Comic Relief. The 36-year-old embarked on a journey from London to Salford, covering a total of 150 miles on foot.
Each day viewers were able to watch Jamie’s journey on social media as he struggled the further into the run he got. At some points fans saw him being supported by friends and family while hobbling in pain.
However, Jamie endured the suffering and managed to cross the finish line on Friday afternoon, earning a total of £2,053,835. Emotions were at an all time high for the former reality star as he was often seen in tears at various different check points.
On Saturday’s instalment of BBC Breakfast, Jamie spoke to Ben Thompson and Rachel Burden about the challenge, admitting it was one of the hardest things he’s ever done.
Ben questioned what kept him going, especially during those moments when he hit a wall and his body was struggling to respond. Jamie commented: “I really didn’t want to let anyone down. I think that was it.
“I’ve lived a very lucky life. I have a roof over my head, I have a lovely family, I have lovely friends. Lots of people don’t have that, and you see the pain that people go through every single day. I just thought people are in real pain.”
The BBC radio star then became emotional as he recalled one person who supported his charity run. He added: “There was one young girl, 12 years old- It’s going to make me go now.”
Composing himself, he continued: “She was going through chemo and she had donated her pocket money.
“When you think of that, when you think of that, you think, ‘Well, of course you’re going to do this’. So, that’s what got me through, it was just an amazing experience.”
As the interview came to an end, Ben and Rachel told viewers Jamie came into the studio hobbling. Questioning how his body feels, Jamie replied: “I’m really struggling to be honest. There’s a lot of pain going on.”
Although he paid tribute to the team that looked after him over the past five days, calling them ‘incredible’. Curious, Rachel asked what the first thing he ate was when he finished his ultra-marathon challenge.
He revealed he tucked into a pizza and a scotch egg. Ben told Jamie to rest up as the interview came to an end. Jamie took to social media this weekend to thank everyone for the mass outpouring of support he’s received.
Part of his caption read: “I’m going to start with the Team behind it all, @bbcradio1 @comicrelief everyone. You have no idea the organisation, the balance of moments the catering, physio, logistics, mapping, planning, socials, everything that goes into something like this. It’s completely mind blowing – and there was not one slip up, not one moment that wasn’t completely seamless.
“That shows true leadership and true team work. Every single person was passionate, excited and drove me forward each day so thank you to everyone!!! To my @bbcradio1 family – wow you guys brought me in with open arms and accepted me from day 1. Words cannot express how grateful I am for you!! Truly.”
BBC Breakfast continues weekdays on BBC One from 6am.
