An Antiques Roadshow expert was visibly delighted at the sight of a 90-year-old TV worth a four-figure sum.
The BBC daytime series ventured to Kirby Hall, Gretton, back in 2014 when expert John Baddeley was presented with an unusual television set.
He commented: “So this morning you brought me in one of the earliest TV sets made by Marconiphone just prior to the Second World War so we think 1937, 1938.
“And in addition to the TV, you’ve also kindly brought me the brochure that comes with it and it very proudly states that ‘although the picture is of relatively small size, it will be quite adequate and suitable for rooms of average dimensions.’
“Well, look at the size of the screen! It’s only what, 3.5, 4 inches square?”
The guest joked: “Small rooms!” As Baddeley continued: “Small rooms and if you just notice at the bottom, it cost 29 guineas. Pre-war, 29 guineas was a huge amount of money.
“I mean, it wasn’t for your average guys in the street. You could have bought a sizable car for 29 guineas so a very high-end luxury item.”
The expert then took a closer look at the brochure, commenting: “But also here is a lovely family group, all arranged around the TV, enjoying an afternoon cup of tea and watching the TV.”
When asked how big her television set was at home, she shared that it was 40 inches, causing him to laugh: “40 inches! So you obviously don’t use this one anymore.”
Answering Baddeley’s question as to who it belonged to, the owner elaborated: “It belonged to my father. We didn’t know he had it and three years ago, he had to go into a home.
“And we were clearing out his flat and he had a large collection of memorabilia from military aircraft and when we finally removed the final box, we found this tucked in the corner.”
Ready with his appraisal, Baddeley concluded: “Well it’s a fabulous piece, it’s in lovely original condition, you’ve brought it with its brochure, quite a collectible piece today.
“At auction, probably a figure between £5,000 and £7,000.”
Upon hearing the figures, the guest’s jaw dropped, looking unsteady on her feet for a moment, unsure of what to say.
She then exclaimed: “Well that’s one more nought than what I thought it was going to be!
“Oh, good grief. Oh dad. What were you sitting on?
“Bless him, he was on pension credit!”
Antiques Roadshow is available to watch on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
