Heartstopper star Bradley Riches announced he’d been cast in Emmerdale this week, and shared a message to trolls after receiving ‘vile’ messages targeting his sexuality and autism

Bradley Riches, the latest cast member of Emmerdale, has been forced to speak out after receiving hateful abuse online. The Heartstopper star wowed fans with news he was joining the ITV soap this week – but some trolls ruined the exciting moment.

Celebrity Big Brother alum Bradley, 23, revealed that people had been sharing “vile” messages about his sexuality and neurodivergence, after the actor – was diagnosed with autism when he was nine– announced he was joining the ITV soap. Bradley quickly addressed the hate on Instagram, sharing a photo of an Emmerdale road sign on his Stories alongside a firm statement for the trolls.

“Beyond excited to be joining Emmerdale! A dream come true,” he wrote. “But let’s talk real for a second. Some of the comments and messages I’ve received are vile.”

The writer added: “Too many people are quick to judge me regarding my sexuality or being autistic, without thinking about the impact of their words. Before you speak, ask yourself: Do I really need to say this? Kindness costs nothing, but mean comments and hiding behind your screens says a LOT about you.”

Bradley ended the message on a high note, proudly stating: “But lucky for you I won’t be behind a screen… I will be on YOUR SCREEN! If you’re mad… stay mad! See you soon x.” Emmerdale has kept tight-lipped about Bradley’s new role, but did reveal that he’s set to begin filming this week, with the character’s scenes set to air in May this year.

While some nasty commenters have caused upset, many people are over the moon about Bradley’s casting – including Lorraine Kelly. Talking about the news on her show on Wednesday, Lorraine gushed: “Now, in the last few hours, it’s been announced that lovely Bradley Riches, he was on the show, he’s a wee sweetie. He is going to be a regular cast member on Emmerdale.”

Bradley himself seems raring to go, and announced when his casting was revealed: “I’m beyond excited to be joining Emmerdale! It’s a real bucket list moment for me, especially since it was my grandad’s favourite soap, I just know he’d be over the moon.

“Everyone has been so lovely and welcoming, and the village is even more amazing in real life. I absolutely love my character (though I can’t spill too much just yet!), and I’m just so grateful for this opportunity. I can’t wait for everyone to see what’s in store.”

Bradley’s casting will give him a new opportunity to advocate for important issues, with the star known for proudly representing his communities and speaking up against hate. The actor – who is engaged – touched many viewers when he opened up to his housemates about coming to terms with his sexuality and autism, saying it’s “taken a long time” to be proud of who he was.
