The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon squeezed in a segment slamming Meghan Markle’s Netflix series, and fans were divided about the gag ahead of season two With Love, Meghan
Meghan Markle poked fun at on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon
Meghan Markle was made the brunt of the joke during a segment on a wildly popular US talkshow. Prince Harry’s wife has divided opinion with her new series With Love, Meghan, and her countrymen couldn’t resist ribbing her for it on Monday.
Meghan’s new Netflix show was released on March 4, and was almost instantly mocked by viewers for some of her more unique cooking and housekeeping tips. Jimmy Fallon referenced one of the eyebrow-raising moments during a ‘Trivia Night’ moment with pal Steve Higgins on The Tonight Show, and viewers thought Meghan would be furious.
“You’re going to get this. What is the number one question that mystifies scientists? Number one question,” Higgins asked. Jimmy took a moment to think, and then answered: “Is there life on another planet?” Higgins made it was clear that he was wrong, and then provided the ‘real’ answer.
“Why does Meghan Markle make her own pretzel bags? They don’t know why,” he said, with the audience falling into peals of laughter. “That’s interesting. She takes it from one bag and puts it in another bag, and that confuses people,” Jimmy said, as Higgins added that even scientists were confused, reiterating: “They don’t know why.”
On X, formerly known as Twitter, fans were torn over the gag. One person reposted the video and shared: “Meghan Markle is going to lose her s**t when she sees @FallonTonight making fun of her.”
In contrast, another person defended: “Meghan has a good sense of humor! Unlike you…” Another agreed: “Why should Meghan be upset that was funny. She will enjoy it.”
With Love, Meghan seemed to be a hit at first, reaching the Top 10 on Netflix within a day of being released. Soon, however, it fell out of the high rating and now just has 36% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Meghan has now faced flack for her new side hustle – particularly in light of her pleas for privacy – while others see it as a breath of fresh air.
The former actress only stated of the debate: “So I just thank you for all the love and support. All of that is part of that creativity that I’ve missed so much, so thank you for loving me so much and celebrating with me.”
Despite mixed reviews, Meghan confirmed that she’s completed filming a second series of the show, and is even launching a new podcast.
Ratings for the first season have now been released, showing that it only just made it into Netflix’s global top 10 with 2.6 million views. Figures from Netflix’s official companion site Tudum also show that 12.6 million hours of the show have been streamed.
This pales in contrast to the 2022 docuseries Harry & Meghan, which had 97.7 million hours watched in its first seven days on the platform – and became its biggest documentary ever.
However, some viewers have been won over after seeing a new side of Meghan, and people working on the show have gushed over her behaviour behind the scenes.
“She made sure everyone felt included, from Netflix executives to our director to every PA on set. No one was left out,” one crew member said of the hostess.
