Katate Dori’s co-owner Dai Walters, who was in a helicopter crash with winning trainer Sam Thomas in November 2022, spoke on his condition following the success.
“My back is a bit sore, but apart from that you’ve just got to live with it and move on,” said Walters. “If you moan, people get fairly fed up of listening to you, but I’m happy.
“We’ve been working so hard especially to have a winner. Sam is working so hard and I’m glad he’s having results.”
Hyland, ridden by Nico de Boinville, finished second despite spending most of the run at the back of the back.
Earlier this month, Hyland was among the 87 initial entrants for April’s Grand National and rode well during the second circuit of the three-mile course, finishing 11 lengths clear of third-placed Our Power.
Meanwhile, 16-1 shot Knockanore won the Eider Handicap Chase at Newcastle by 16 lengths from 7-1 hopeful O’Connell.
Choosethenews, the 5-1 favourite, finished back in sixth, while Anglers Crag, who won this race 12 months ago, was a non-runner.
Your Own Story, who had finished fifth, was later dropped down to ninth place after jockey Patrick Wadge failed to weigh in after the race’s conclusion.
