Feb. 20 (UPI) — President Donald Trump has signed an executive order directing federal departments and agencies to identify and end all financial benefits received by undocumented immigrants.
Trump signed the executive order Wednesday, according to a White House fact sheet that framed the presidential directive as an act to “ensure taxpayer resources are not used to incentivize or support illegal immigration.”
It was not exactly clear what effect the order would have as undocumented migrants “are generally barred from welfare programs,” the White House highlighted in its fact sheet.
According to the National Immigration Law Center, major federal public benefits programs have long excluded some non-U.S. citizens from eligibility for assistance, with restrictions tightening following the passage of federal welfare and immigration laws in 1996.
Welfare programs, such as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, non-emergency Medicaid and others, are largely unavailable to undocumented immigrants, and even immigrants who are eligible for such programs are reluctant to enroll, the law center said.
The move is the latest by Trump targeting immigration, an issue that he campaigned on, often with the use of incendiary rhetoric and misinformation.
Since returning to the White House on Jan. 20, Trump has issued a slew of executive orders concerning immigration, some of which are being challenged in court.
Through the orders, he has deployed additional law enforcement to the southern border, which he declared a national emergency, restarted border wall construction, suspended entry of non-citizens into the United States, restarted mass detention and removal of non-citizens, ended protected status granted to some countries deemed to be experiencing emergency situations and is attempting to end birthright citizenship, among others.
The order Trump signed Wednesday also seeks to ensure federal funds to so-called sanctuary states and communities do not assist undocumented migrants, which the administration frequently refers to as “illegal aliens.”
It also mandates improvements in the verification process to prevent benefits from going to undocumented immigrants.
“President Trump is committed to safeguarding Federal public benefits for American citizens who are truly in need,” the fact sheet said.
