A GRAN thought she had won £25,000 playing the People’s Postcode Lottery before she suddenly realised her error.
Beverley Hawkesford had signed up to play the lottery after her friends Emma and Lee won £30,000 each while playing during a Covid lockdown.
Just five years later, retired receptionist Bev and her husband Andy, who live in Coleshill, Warwickshire, won their own share of the jackpot.
However, when they received their winner’s check, the couple both admitted they misread the staggering sum.
While they initially thought they’d only won £25,000, they quickly realised they had in-fact won ten times that amount.
Andy said: “I thought it was £25,000 and didn’t even realise, and then I suddenly saw the other nought.”
Bev added: “I thought, ‘That comma is in the wrong place’ – Lucky us!”
The gran was one of four neighbours living in postcode B46 1BT to share the Postcode Lottery’s weekly Millionaire Street prize on Saturday.
She know hopes to hire out their local pub to celebrate the £250,000 win and the couple’s golden wedding anniversary.
Bev also revealed that her win had only come after her friends, married couple Lee and Emma Mellor, each won £30,000 on the lottery’s Street Prize in 2020.
The pair, who live just half a mile from Bev’s address, were one of four to win the prize in May 2020.
Inspired by their victory, Bev signed up to the lottery, likely not knowing she’d be a quarter of a million pounds richer in just five years.
Now, the pair are planning celebrations for their 50th wedding anniversary, which takes place on March 27.
Bev, who formerly worked at The Belfry Hotel, said that while the couple have a large group of friends, they are keen to get everyone together for the moment.
Andy joked that the pair could now cover the cost of the bar when hiring one of their local pubs for the event.
The couple also revealed how they are going to treat themselves to a few sunny holidays in light of the win.
