DONALD TRUMP came into office with a number of big promises to the American people.
But one of the biggest was that he would crack down on the millions of illegal migrants who have been flooding into America in recent years.
And not just to stop more people entering illegally but to deport the people who had already broken in.
He appointed a tough border czar, Tom Homan, who assured Americans that he would see through the president’s policies.
Just a few days into the new government, things have started happening.
In one of his first presidential directives, Trump declared a state of emergency at the southern border.
This means that the US Armed Forces have been able to assist the Department of Homeland Security in stopping illegal migrants from coming in.
Criminals arrested
As for those who might have a case for asylum, Trump has reinstated his “remain in Mexico” policy.
That means that people who are coming to America and then claiming asylum will now have their cases considered outside the country rather than inside.
Then there are the more pro-active stances Homan and Trump have already begun.
ICE officers, among others, have already started raids in so-called “sanctuary cities”.
These are cities run by the American Left which have done a lot of grandstanding in recent years by declaring that normal migration laws don’t apply there.
Unfortunately such cities — including Chicago, New York and Los Angeles — have seen huge upsurges in crime.
As a result, in recent days hundreds of gang members, drug-dealers and other known criminals have been rounded up in multiple cities.
In Boston, officers arrested rape suspects and gangsters including members of the notoriously violent MS-13 gang.
One Haitian gangster was caught on camera trying to resist officers and screaming “F**k Trump, Biden forever!” and shouting that he was “not going back to Haiti”.
The man in question is reported to have at least 17 recent convictions.
And when the clip of him resisting arrest went viral, Homan had a clear message for him.
The border czar told the media “Well, he’s wrong. He’s going back to Haiti. I can tell you that.”
With all of this going on — and some of it even being supported by the moderate Left — there is one question for Britain in particular.
That is: could we do something similar here?
After all, we know that there are far more than a million illegal migrants in the UK.
Recent reports said that the figure was over a million, but it was over a million eight years ago, and the real figure must now be far higher than that.
Despite the best efforts of the BBC and other media to cover up the story, we have all seen the boatloads of illegal migrants landing on our own border every day.
We have all seen the daily arrivals whose numbers just keep going up year on year.
And we have all seen the UK border authorities — like some US border authorities under Biden — help these people to break the law.
The UK Border Force effectively works as an arm of the smuggling networks.
The criminal gangs send boats full of paying migrants into the English Channel and then our Border Force meets them and escorts them safely to our shores.
Nearly all of these people will stay.
They will clog up the asylum system and cost this country millions in hotel and other housing fees.
One recent report said that some 60 per cent of illegal migrants in the UK are living in London.
So it isn’t as though it would be hard to find them and deport them if there was the political will. But there lies the problem.
No politics will
Because, unlike in the US, there is no political will in the UK to do anything about this.
Under the last Conservative Government, legal and illegal migration reached record highs.
The Conservatives hid behind the European Convention on Human Rights (to which this country is still a signatory).
They claimed that there was no way they could deport anyone so long as Britain was in the ECHR.
That was a cop-out. Other countries which are not just in the ECHR, but in the EU, break this convention all the time.
Because they realise that the convention is unworkable.
In the most extreme cases of people breaking their laws, the French and Italians, for instance, just deport people to their country of origin anyway.
Unfortunately for us, the present Labour Government is even worse than the Conservatives. They are nowhere near addressing our border breakdown.
Border breakdown
My prediction is that it will take even larger tragedies than have already occurred for a British government to act.
We could do what Trump is doing tomorrow.
But we won’t because we don´t yet have anyone in charge who wants to deal with a mass crime which makes us poorer and more unsafe.
Maybe some day soon we will have such a government.
But in Britain — unlike America — that day seems very far off.
