The English Football League (EFL) are investigating crowd incidents during Wrexham’s League One fixture with Shrewsbury Town on Thursday.

Stewards formed a barricade as Wrexham’s James McClean went to take a throw-in in front of Shrewsbury’s supporters in the second half of the contest at The Croud Meadow.

Play was briefly halted as a result, with footage showing objects being thrown from the stands in the direction of McClean – who made derogatory comments about Shrewsbury on his Instagram account after Wrexham’s 2-1 defeat.

The post was later deleted.

Speaking to Sky Sports about the incident involving McClean, Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson said: “He’s fine. James is used to it wherever he goes.

“Fans get on his back home and away and sometimes it can be tough and spill over but he is used to it.”

It remains unclear if McClean’s social media post is being investigated, but Wrexham have confirmed the EFL are looking into the crowd incidents during their cross-border derby with Shrewsbury.
