Holt Town, said to be the “first of its kind” in the city, will be located along the Medlock Valley between the busy areas of Ancoats and New Islington.

It will feature a tram stop and regenerated historical mills and warehouse buildings.

It will also be equipped with a community hub and lido among other proposals such as 15-acres of green space and a river park.

Plenty of affordable housing is also on the cards, as well as functional apartments for working residents and 4,500 new homes.

The development scheme is adopting a carbon-neutral approach and will encourage locals to opt for active travel options and public transport over using a car.

Initial talks began in August last year, including conversations with local primary school pupils to generate play space ideas for the community.

Bev Craig, Leader of Manchester City Council, said the new town has enormous potential, adding she believes it will act as an “urban regeneration” example.

Bev also emphasised the town’s people-first focus, saying it will include a number of green spaces and areas for young people.

The City Council head said the area would take a “digital first” approach by building smart infrastructure.

She said: “This neighbourhood will represent a people first focus around active travel, green spaces, new play spaces for young people – and a digital first approach that will better connect the community with local services.
