Dec. 13 (UPI) — Eighteen years after she said Duke LaCrosse players raped her, Crystal Mangum admitted she lied and asked the men to forgive her. Mangum is serving time in prison for murdering her then-boyfriend in 2013.
She falsely accused David Evans, Collin Finnerty and Reade Seligmann of raping her in 2006. The men were exonerated.
“I testified falsely against them by saying that they raped me when they didn’t, and that was wrong, and I betrayed the trust of a lot of other people who believed in me,” Mangum said in an interview published on the “Let’s Talk with Kat” podcast.
The interview was done at the North Carolina Correctional Institution for Women.
Duke University reached a settlement with the falsely accused men in June 2007. At that time, the men said in a statement their ordeal was caused by a “rogue prosecutor.”
The men were cleared of Magnum’s false allegations by North Carolina’s then-Attorney General Roy Cooper.
Prosecutor Mike Nifong was disbarred for ethics violations and professional misconduct.
Mangum was an erotic dancer and she lied about the men following a party.
The city of Durham settled a lawsuit with the men in 2014 that included a $50,000 payment to the North Carolina Innocence Inquiry Commission.
The student newspaper at Duke said the university has not responded to requests for comment about Mangum’s belated admission.
Additional victims of the false allegations were the Lacrosse team’s canceled season and then-coach Mike Pressler, who lost his job.
Mangum’s allegations made national news in March 2006.
Her lies were believed by many in the Duke University community at the time and the accused men’s reputations were damaged by antagonism triggered by the false allegations.
