Dec. 13 (UPI) — First lady Jill Biden hosted a U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots event Friday at the White House as part of her Joining Forces Initiative, which seeks to to support military families, caregivers and survivors.

Preceded into the East Room of the White House by a group of joyful children of military families who gazed with wonder at the glimmering holiday decorations and stacks of presents place there, Biden took the podium and told them, “You are loved.”

“There are so many people who care about you — from your family and friends, to your teachers and classmates, to the president and me,” she said. “And the best thing we can do with that love is to let it overflow — to share it with others who might really need it.”

The donated toys stacked up in the East Room were destined for needy boys and girls in the Washington, D.C., area. The children participating in the event helped the first lady and other volunteers sort them into boxes earmarked for various parts of the nation’s capital.

“The president and I are grateful, and we’re honored to open the White House to all of you,” Biden said. “Merry Christmas and happy holidays. And now, let’s get to sorting!”

The Marine Corps Reserve contingent was led by Lt. Gen. Leonard Anderson IV, commander of the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve, and by Lt. Gen. James Laster (Ret.), president and CEO of the Toys for Tots Foundation.

“During the season of reflection and goodwill, we’re here today to support a very meaningful and impactful mission — bringing the joys of the holiday season to less fortunate children,” Anderson said.

He noted the occasion marks the 77th year of the Toys for Tots program, whose logo was personally drawn by Walt Disney in 1947.

“Last year we had millions of toys delivered to 10 million children and this year, I think, we’re going to set another record,” Anderson added.

The White House said the Toys for Tots event was part of Jill Biden’s Joining Forces Initiative, which focuses on the needs of military families in the areas of employment and entrepreneurship, military child education and health and well-being.
