Dec. 13 (UPI) — One person died and a second was listed in serious condition after a small airplane crashed on Interstate 684 near Exit 2 in Harrison, N.Y., in Westchester County, authorities said.

The crash happened on Thursday evening, several miles south of the Westchester County Airport in White Plains, N.Y.

The Federal Aviation Administration said the pilot of the single-engine Tecnam P-2008 reported engine problems before the freeway crash. A portion of the freeway where the crash happened remained closed until Friday morning.

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul said her office was briefed on the incident and that State Police responded to the crash site.

“The crash also caused an aviation gas spill, which [the Department of Environmental Conservation] is working rapidly to contain and clean up,” she said in a statement Thursday night. “My heart goes out to the loved ones of those on board during this tragic incident, and I am praying for a safe recovery for the injured individual.”

The National Transportation Safety Board is expected to start their investigation on Saturday opposite of the FAA’s own probe into the crash.
