Dec. 10 (UPI) — Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene said she was the victim of a bomb threat, making the Georgia firebrand the latest U.S. politician to receive such a threat in recent weeks.
In an online statement, Greene, a Republican, said her local Rome Police Department received an email warning that a pipe bomb had been planted in her mailbox.
A copy of the email shared by Greene states the bomb was set to detonate during the weekend but would also explode the next time the mailbox was opened.
“Even if Marjorie does not open the mailbox herself I’m satisfied with the prospect of some pig cops losing their lives or being injured,” according to the email, which ended with “VIVIA VIVA Palestine.”
Greene posted video of the bomb squad at her residence to social media platform X.
Her office later said in a statement that “Greene is safe,” while suggesting there was no actual bomb placed in her mailbox.
The congresswoman also stated the email was traced to a Russian IP address.
“Due to the international nature and severity of this threat, my office is collaborating closely with local and federal law enforcement, including the FBI, to ensure the perpetrator is brought to justice,” she said.
She later added that a woman was killed in a vehicle accident involving a Rome Police bomb squad member who was responding to the threat made against her property.
Greene identified the woman as 66-year-old Tammie Pickelsimer.
Local news outlet WRGA reported that Pickelsimer had been driving a 2002 Mazda when it collided with a GMC Sierra being driven by a Rome police officer with the bomb squad.
“These violent political threats have fatal consequences. It’s an undue strain on our law enforcement who must treat them seriously. The officer was responding to protect my life. And now, a woman has lost her life because of this despicable act,” Greene said in a separate statement.
“The perpetrator of this crime has committed murder in our small community of Rome, Georgia.”
The threat is only the latest to target politicians following a bitter election that Donald Trump, who survived an assassination attempt, won. On the road to his victory, Trump often used incendiary language to describe his opponent, Vice President Kamala Harris, and the Democratic Party in the process. Harris and her party characterized Trump as being a threat to U.S. democracy.
On Saturday, Rep. Lori Trahan, D-Mass., said she was informed by police of a bomb threat targeting her family.
On Thanksgiving, at least six Democrats in the U.S. House and Senate received similar bomb threats.
Those threats came after days after several Cabinet and administrative picks by President-elect Donald Trump, a Republican, had received bomb threats and swatting calls.
