Dec. 6 (UPI) — Federal agents arrested Boston councilor Tania Fernandes Anderson on Friday on public corruption charges alleging a kickback scheme to collect city funds illegally.

Agents from the U.S. Attorney’s Office, FBI and IRS arrested Fernandes Anderson at her home before dawn Friday and she was expected to make her initial appearance in Boston federal court on Friday afternoon.

Prosecutors are charging Fernandes Anderson with six counts of aiding and abetting wire fraud in connection with the use of federal money through her role on the city council.

Prosecutors charge that Fernandes Anderson hired a relative to her staff in 2022 despite city laws prohibiting hiring immediate family members. The councilor is accused of giving that staffer a $13,000 bonus, of which $7,000 was given back to Anderson as a kickback.

“These six felony charges stem from an alleged kickback scheme that she orchestrated to obtain several thousand dollars in taxpayer money in exchange for a bribe she paid to a staffer who gave a very large bonus,” U.S. Attorney Joshua Levy said, according to WCVB-TV.

According to the unsealed indictment, the money exchanges between Fernandes Anderson and her unnamed relative would range in the thousands of dollars with at least one exchange of funds happening in a bathroom at city hall.
