Dec. 6 (UPI) — A Missouri couple who allegedly attempted a do-it-yourself circumcision on their son at home are facing child abuse charges.
Tyler Wade Gibson was charged with child abuse and performing an unauthorized surgery while Bailey Alexus Gibson was charged with abuse or neglect of a child, according to court documents.
According to the Morgan County Sheriff’s Department, they got a report from Columbia University Hospital about a child that had been circumcised at home Nov. 27 and the procedure had not gone as planned.
The Gibsons allegedly took the child home from the hospital against medical advice after the botched circumcision caused excessive bleeding.
Deputies arrested them after speaking with them about the procedure when Tyler Gibson said he used a “utility tool” to do the circumcision after he “conducted research and prayed a blessing.”
Gibson has no medical training.
The couple took the child to Lake Regional Hospital the night of Nov. 27 before being brought to University Hospital due to the bleeding.
According to a probable cause statement from the Morgan County Sheriff’s Department, the couple left the hospital with the child against medical advice “because they grew tired of waiting” after four hours.
Bailey Gibson told deputies she was hesitant about doing the circumcision but assisted with it anyway.
She was taken into custody Nov. 29. A probable cause statement said five children were removed from the Gibson home by the Division of Family Services.
The age of the child was not revealed by authorities.
