Australia ruthlessly dismantled India in their first outing since October’s shock T20 World Cup semi-final defeat.
Led by Tahlia McGrath in place of the injured Alyssa Healy, the hosts bowled out India for just 100 on a good batting wicket, before racing to victory in the first of three one-day internationals in just 16.2 overs.
The five-wicket margin of victory flattered India, who were blown away by pace bowler Megan Schutt’s career-best 5-19, while only Jemimah Rodrigues managed to pass 20.
In reply, openers Phoebe Litchfield and Georgia Voll set the tone with the bat as Australia responded to their surprise World Cup semi-final defeat by South Africa in style.
Litchfield crashed 35 off 29 balls before becoming one of Renuka Singh Thakur’s three victims but 21-year-old debutant Voll ensured Australia got over the line with an unbeaten 46.
The second ODI is at the same venue – Allan Border Field, Brisbane – on Sunday (23:45 GMT Saturday), with live radio commentary on the BBC Sport website and app.
