These pirates sought riches at sea but Sun Bingo has treasure for landlubbers

Occasional Digest - a story for you

THESE pirates have famous stories about their real exploits on the seven seas. However, Sun Bingo players can collect their gold coins on land.

On 22nd November 1718, off the coast of North Carolina, Edward Teach (better known as “Blackbeard”) was killed.

He was said to have sustained five gun shots and 20 blade wounds before succumbing to his injuries.

After his death, his head was hung from the mast and his body was thrown into the ocean.

Legend has it that it then swam three times around the ship.

Before his death, Blackbeard had secured a reputation as the most notorious pirate of the Golden Age of Piracy (approximately 1650-1720).

His fear-inducing appearance reportedly included a waist-length black beard within which he would light fuses, and he carried 12 pistols.

The pirate captain maintained a fierce reputation, which included shooting his first mate just for fun.

Blackbeard is also known for collecting treasure.

When the sunken remains of his flagship, Queen Anne’s Revenge, were eventually found, it contained 250,000 artefacts.

However, Edward Teach wasn’t the only person to sail into the history books for fantastical acts of piracy.

Black Bart

Bartholomew Roberts was born in 1682. Before his death in 1722, he amassed a collection of over 470 prize ships, making him the most successful pirate during the Golden Age of Piracy.

While pirates may seemed to have been wild and unruly, Black Bart ran a tight ship.

WE’VE GOT YOUR FRIDAY DRINKS RECOMMENDATIONS SORTED

All decisions on board were made via a democratic vote, there was no fighting or gambling, treasure was shared equally and there was an 8pm curfew.

As a deeply religious man, Black Bart also refused to fight on Sundays.

Being a successful pirate has its drawbacks. The pirate accrued so much treasure that he didn’t have room for any more.

His solution was to continue raiding merchant ships, but he would then sell the ship and its cargo back to the rightful owner.

Ned Low

Captain Edward Low was active during the latter years of the Golden Age of Piracy.

His notorious reputation mainly focuses on his sadistic treatment of captives.

One captured whaling boat captain was fed his own ears, sprinkled with salt.

Ned Low never faced punishment for his piracy crimes as he was never caught.

Anne Bonny

While piracy was predominately a male venture, there were some female pirates that made a name for themselves.

Anny Bonny was an Irish pirate and one of Captain Jack Rackham’s most formidable crew.

She dressed in men’s clothing when raiding ships and was able to have her death sentence commuted due to being pregnant.

Zheng Yi Sao

Also known as the Chinese Pirate Queen, Zheng Yi was the most successful pirate of all time.

She commanded a fleet of 1,800 ships and 80,000 men. For comparison, Blackbeard had 4 ships and 300 men.

She also had strict rules for her crew, including death sentences for crew that assaulted female prisoners, tried to give orders or ignored orders given to them.

Her reign over the seas ended when Zheng Yi accepted an amnesty offer from the Chinese government.

She was allowed to keep all of her loot and many of the crew were offered military or government jobs.
