In her viral video, the TikTok user (@fixingmyfinances) explained the handy way she saves money while working from home.

She explained that she avoids putting on her heat due to financial issues.

“I’m in £12,000 of credit card debt and one of my favourite money-saving hacks as a work from home girlie is using a heated blanket instead of turning the heating on,” she said.

Since she spends most of her day working from home, she realised this trick would save her a significant amount.

The TikToker broke down the maths of her money-saving technique.

“The heating costs £1.65 per hour versus my heated blanket, which costs 2.7p per hour,” she explained.

She showed her audience how she sits at her desk with the heated throw in her lap.

The content creator’s dog even cosied up to her to feel the warmth of the blanket.

She said that the hack helped her to cut down on her household bills since she only had to turn on her heating a handful of times instead of every day.

You can pick up heated throws in stores such as Asda, Dunelm, and B&M.

Shoppers can also look for a heated blanket online from Amazon.

She explained that she’s only had to put her heating on three times so far this winter.

TikTok users shared their thoughts on the advice in the comments section.

“I’ve been using my heated blanket instead of the heating and now my room is covered in mould,” wrote one viewer.

“They’re so good but the house just gets that horrible damp cold feeling and I know it needs some help drying out,” said another follower.

5 ways to keep your house warm in winter

Property expert Joshua Houston shared his tips.

1. Curtains

“Windows are a common place for the outside cold to get into your home, this is because of small gaps that can let in air so always close your curtains as soon as it gets dark,” he said.

This simple method gives you an extra layer of warmth as it can provide a kind of “insulation” between your window and curtain.

2. Rugs

“Your floor is another area of your home where heat can be lost and can make your home feel chilly,” he continued. “You might notice on cold days, that your floor is not nice to walk on due to it freezing your feet.

“Add rugs to areas that don’t already have a carpet, this provides a layer of insulation between your bare floor and the room above.”

3. Check your insulation

Check your pipes, loft space, crawlspaces and underneath floorboards.

“Loose-fill insulation is very good for this, and is a more affordable type of insulation, with a big bag being able to be picked up for around £30,” Joshua explained.

4. Keep your internal doors closed

“Household members often gather in one room in the evening, and this is usually either the kitchen or living room,” Joshua said.

“This means you only have to heat a small area of your home, and closing the doors keeps the heat in and the cold out.”

5. Block drafts

Don’t forget to check cat flaps, chimneys and letterboxes, as they can let in cold air if they aren’t secure.

“Heating is expensive but so worth the money better for your health and preventing mold in the house,” agreed a third commenter.

“I stay in bed and use my heated mattress. I’ve had it for a year and wouldn’t be without it!” said another person.

“The rest of the house can stay cold, I’m a cosy queen wrapped in mine 3p an hour bargain!” wrote one viewer.

“I work from home 90% of the time. I could do with this,” commented another follower.

“Good job my bills are included because there’d be no way I’m not having the heating on,” said one TikTok user.
