Voting With Wallets: The Rise of Election-Themed Tokens During Presidential Run-in

Occasional Digest - a story for you

Cryptocurrencies inspired by political figures or movements, dubbed PoltiiFi tokens, have opened a new pathway for speculation amid the presidential run-in.

The prices of these tokens often mimic the real-world performance of the political candidates they represent.

PolitiFi Tokens: The Future Of Politics Or Another Crypto Fad?

An immutable on-chain environment seems perfectly suited for high-stakes political activity, and this has birthed a new breed of speculative tokens.

But is this sector here to stay? Or will it fizzle out after the election?

The leading PolitiFi token pays homage to Republican Party candidate Donald Trump, called MAGA (TRUMP).

It launched in August 2023 and burst into the mainstream conscious Q4 of that year, when traders realized it could prove a popular speculative vehicle as the election moves closer.

TRUMP’s all-time high (ATH) was reached in June 2024, when it hit $17 and a market cap of over $750 million.

This occurred after Trump’s odds of winning the election surged by over 10% on the predictions market Polymarket, which allows users to bet on real-world events.

Simultaneously, Jeo Boden, a token inspired by his then-political adversary, Joe Biden, tanked alongside the candidate’s odds of winning the election.

BODEN hit its ATH when Biden’s odds were highest in April 2024. But now that Biden has exited the race, BODEN is down 99.61%.

Fast forwarding to election week, Kamala Harris has seen a slight uptick on Polymarket, so fan-favorite token Kamala Horris has experienced a 54% rally. That said, HORRIS has dipped today as Harris’ Polymarket odds step down again.

This shows that PolitiFi meme coins act similarly to Polymarket, allowing speculators to vote on who they think will win the election, financially incentivized to choose correctly.

However, the difference is that PolitiFi tokens are less binary.

Not only are traders voting on who they think will win, but they’re also betting on which token grasps meme culture the best.

There are hundreds of Trump-themed tokens on the market – but only some have pumped today.

Trump 47 has surged 35%, while Super Trump has plunged 16%.

This makes PolitFi inherently more risky, but also more rewarding for those preemptive of meme culture trends and narratives.

But for many of these hyper-partisan PolitiFi tokens, their utility probably ends with electoral speculation.

This is a pressing issue, extrapolated by the fact that tokens linked to the losing candidate will see major downside.

Crypto presents an optimal environment for political activity. Its immutable, borderless, and censorship-resistant nature provides the building blocks for innovation.

But while these early PolitiFi plays have been fun, most won’t stand the test of time.

However, one PolitiFi token is shaking things up and aiming for long-term success. It’s the new presale project FreeDum Fighters, and it has raised $450K so far.

Is FreeDum Fighters the Best Long-Term PolitiFi Play On the Market?

PolitiFi tokens that pay homage to a single political figure may have difficulty staying afloat, but FreeDum Fighters has an entire ecosystem based on user rewards, on-chain voting, and satire.

It’s a recipe that finely balances groundbreaking innovation and degen meme culture, cultivating a long-term appeal.

FreeDum Fighters invites users to stake their $DUM tokens in freedom-loving patriot MAGATRON’s pool or justice-seeking Kamacop 9000’s. These mechanized representations of the political figureheads instill a lighthearted, playful allure into the project.

But the rewards are based on which real-life candidate wins the election.

This tool could also evolve beyond the election, laying the way for predictive staking on other future events.

Another feature is FreeDum Fighters’ “Weekly Debates,” which will run every Wednesday to Friday and invite users to engage in political dialogue, arguing for or against a nominated topic.

The winning side will earn $DUM tokens.

FreeDum Fighters is also packed with other features and will even allow its community to propose upgrades and changes.

It’s not tied to one specific political figure, mitigating the risk faced by hyperpartisan tokens like TRUMP, HORRIS, and BODEN.

Analyst ClayBro says it will “send PolitiFi to the next level.”

However, he underscored that the price will rise throughout the presale.

The next increase will occur later today.
