The dramatic trailer for the new season has the voiceover: “I would like to extend a heartfelt welcome to you all.”

“Once each of the games has concluded, you may call for a vote. If the majority agrees, you may take the accumulated prize money and leave.”

“You may choose to stay and increase your potential winnings, or choose to stop the games now and leave. The decision is entirely up to you.”

The South Korean dystopian survival thriller series became a huge hit as viewers were on the edge of their seats throughout series one.

The first season was released worldwide on September 17 2021 to critical acclaim and international attention.

The series revolved around a secret contest where 456 players in deep financial hardship gamble with their greatest asset – their lives, to play a series of deadly children’s games.

The prize money? 46.5 billion South Korean won.

The show was so successful it led to the launch of Squid Game: The Challenge, a reality competition show on Netflix based on the series.

A total of 456 players competed in challenges for a whopping $4.56 million prize.

The show was the number-one English-language show on Netflix for the first two weeks after its release.

Following on from the success of series one the second season has been developed for television by Korean writer and television producer Hwang Dong-hyuk.

Series two takes place three years after Gi-hun wins Squid Game and offers a glimpse at a very different man following his jaw-dropping decisions in the Season 1 finale.

Now his sunny disposition is replaced by a hardened demeanor following the horrors of the previous games.

Set to release on Netflix on December 26, 2024, fans have already gone wild on X, formerly Twitter, to express their excitement at its return.

One fan said: “DETECTIVE HWANG JUNHO IS BACK!” in reference to the South Korean police detective searching for his missing brother.

Played by Korean actor Wi Ha-joon, he infiltrates the 33rd Squid Game game by taking the identity of one of the workers, and later as a manager and waiter.

Clearly thrilled he was back, the comments section was full of heart emojis, as one said: “Man of my heart’ and another commented: “Serving looks!”

Director Hwang said he is excited for fans to see what’s in store when Squid Game returns, telling Netflix in 2023: “I do have a lot on my shoulders, but I’ll make sure it’s worth the wait.”
