An Alaska Airlines flight was forced to evasive action and slam on the brakes during an aborted takeoff.

It came as a Southwest flight was given clearance to cross the same runway.

Alaska flight 369’s actions in braking sharply caused an effective tire blowout.

The Federal Aviation Administration is now investigating the incident at Nashville International Airport.

“We are grateful for the expertise of our pilots who immediately applied the brakes to prevent the incident from escalating,” Alaska Airlines said.

“Our pilots train for these situations and they handled the situation expertly.”

The tires deflated due to buildup of heat during the rapid stop, the airline said, and the plane was initially able to taxi off the runway.

The plane was carrying 176 passengers and six crew members and no injuries were reported.

“Our guests deplaned and made their way safely into the terminal,” the airline added.

“We’re deeply sorry for the concerning experience this created for our guests and crew members.”

Alaska passengers were re-accommodated on another aircraft for their scheduled flight to Seattle.
