Nunthorpe Stakes: Bradsell wins battle of sprint stars with Asfoora back in fourth

Occasional Digest - a story for you

Bradsell won the battle of the sprinters to claim victory for trainer Archie Watson in the Nunthorpe Stakes at York.

The raced had been billed as a contest between star sprinters Asfoora and Big Evs but Bradsell, ridden by Hollie Doyle, stormed home to win the five-furlong race by three-quarters of a length.

Ryan Moore took second on Believing ahead of Starlust, with 6-4 favourite Asfoora back in fourth in the big race on day three of the Ebor Festival.

After victory at the King George Stakes at Goodwood, Big Evs was some way back in eighth.

Bradsell stayed with Ponntos, who made a strong start on the inside, early on before surging clear to leave the chasing pack with too much to do in the closing stages.

“He’s unbelievable – I don’t have any other words to describe,” Doyle told ITV when asked about Bradsell.

“He’s definitely the comeback kid. All credit to Archie and the team at home. They’ve done an incredible job with him.

“I remember getting a phone call from Archie when he got injured and he said it might be career-ending – but here we are.

“Never underestimate our horses and what Archie does with them. This means everything to me. This is what I do it for, days like this.”
