A picturesque and charming Greek island just 30 minutes from Turkey has remained unspoilt by tourism.

The islands of Greece differ considerably in size and popularity. Rhodes, Crete and Corfu are favourites with families seeking a more active holiday with entertainment on hand, while couples and friends may prefer the more trendy and chic islands of Santorini or Mykonos for a more relaxing and sophisticated break.

There are around 200 inhabited islands in Greece so there’s plenty to choose from whatever your tastes. For those who crave an unspoilt, traditionally Greek destination, there is a picturesque, remote island with less than 600 locals who call it home that can tick that box. Kastellorizo is one of the smallest in the Dodecanese archipelago and has a population of just 584, according to the 2021 census. The island, also known as Meis in Turkish, is around a mile from the south coast of Turkey and can be reached by boat from the similarly unspoilt resort of Kas, which is just 30 minutes away across the turquoise waters.

There are several beautiful beaches on or near the island, varying from sand to pebbles and even a staircase on Saint George Beach that leads directly into the crystal-clear waters where you can swim or snorkel and marvel at the marine life under the waves. It’s also possible to take boat taxis to Aya Georgio beach where you can swim in the dazzling azure waters of the Blue Cave or Blue Grotto. For those looking for a secluded spot to unwind nearby Ro Island is accessible by boat and makes for a relaxing day trip.

Mandraki harbour is lined with pretty pastel-coloured neoclassical houses and buildings which you can walk between and there are around 20 churches of varying sizes on the island. There is also a former Ottoman mosque which dates from the second half of the 18th century and has been restored and reopened as a museum. For those intrigued by cultural and historical attractions, the St. George Monastery at the top of the island and the Castle of St. Jean Knights are well worth visiting and offer breathtaking views of the island and beyond.

The restaurants serve local Greek and Turkish influenced cuisine using local ingredients and fresh fish caught by local fishermen. Those situated on the harbour are more expensive than those in the back streets where you’re more likely to find the locals and prices more reasonable. Drinks are very affordable, costing only £1.48 for a pint of beer, according to the Express.

The picture-postcard taverna Ta Planatnia on Saint George’s Square with its wooden tables and gingham tablecloths, was where some scenes in Gabriele Salvatores’ 1991 Oscar-winning film Mediterraneo were shot. The film was set on the island during the Second World War and features many of its isolated and incredible views.
