Who is Bruno Guimarães?

Bruno Guimarães is a Brazilian footballer who plays for Premier League side Newcastle United

He was born in the São Cristóvão neighbourhood of Rio de Janeiro on November 16, 1997.

He made his debut in the Audax youth team before earning his place in the senior team when he was just 17.

The midfielder then made the move on loan to Athletico Paranaense, before eventually signing a permanent contract with the side a year later.

He soon caught the eye of scouts further afield though, and in 2020 signed a four-and-a-half year contract with French Ligue 1 side Lyon for a reported €20million.

But just two years later, Newcastle United swooped in and secured Bruno on a four-and-a-half-year contract, for a reported fee of up to £40million.

He scored on his first full debut game in the Magpies’ 2-1 win over Southampton.

Bruno also plays for the Brazilian national team, and was named in the squad for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

He’s married to Ana Lidia Martins, and they have two sons – Matteo and Pietro.

What is Bruno Guimarães’ celebration and what does it mean?

There’s a very sweet meaning behind a goal celebration that Bruno carried out when he scored against Brighton in May 2023.

Bruno Guimaraes’ Wag Ana Lidia Martins wows fans on Instagram

He netted the final goal in his side’s 4-1 thrashing of Brighton, and afterwards revealed that he’d dedicated it to a boy called Arthur.

Arthur Salters-Hoult, who’s from Wallsend, was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia earlier in the year.

The 5 year old is going through intense chemotherapy treatment, and potentially needs a bone marrow transplant at some point in the future too.

After his goal, Bruno’s celebration saw him make a letter A with his fingers for Arthur.

He posted to social media afterwards, saying: “This was for you, my young boy!! We are behind you! Everything will be alright.”

The midfielder also put up a picture of when he met Arthur and presented him with a Newcastle shirt.

It said “You can beat this Arthur” on the back.

The celebration was a variation on what Bruno normally does – his usual move is to make a letter M with his fingers for his son Matteo after drawing out a heart shape.

How many goals has Bruno Guimarães scored for Newcastle?

In 87 appearances for the Magpies, Bruno has scored a total of 16 times.

The number 39 player plays in midfield and has firmly become a fan favourite.

He isn’t the only member of the team with a unique goal celebration either.

His teammate Anthony Gordon has also promised a new celebration poking fun at the time he injured himself in a biking accident.

Several other footballers have equally wacky ways of celebrating when they find the back of the net.

Jude Bellingham has become known for his “arms aloft” goal gesture.

Meanwhile Arsenal striker Gabriel Jesus’s signature phone celebration is a heartfelt tribute to his mother.

Changes to the Premier League for 2024/25

NOTHING stays the same forever.

And that includes the Premier League, which is making a number of tweaks this season.

Team news will now be released 75 MINUTES before kick-off, 15 minutes earlier than had been the case before.

Things could get crowded on the touchline, with the number of substitutes permitted to warm-up boosted from three players per team to FIVE.

There’s also a change to how added time is calculated when a team scores a goal, an update to the ‘multiball’ system and the introduction of semi-automated offsides – but not straight away.

Go here to read about all the changes to the Premier League for 2024/25.
