Brit-loved holiday destinations where a five-star family deal is hundreds less than a three-star break

Occasional Digest - a story for you

BRITS still looking for a cheap holiday this year can find five-star holidays in some destinations that are cheaper than three-star stays elsewhere.

The numbers have been produced by holiday package comparison site TravelSupermarket, which has launched the Cheap Holiday Index Platform (CHIPs).

This shows holidaymakers where to find the most affordable holiday deals, along with the cheapest places to eat and drink.

CHIPs is described as the “go-to place” for anyone looking to compare destinations cost-for-cost, ahead of picking their summer getaway.

Now it has revealed where travellers can find the cheapest five-star hotel destinations for last-minute family holidays, with a new top 10 list.

Surprisingly, the data shows that five-star week-long holidays in three destinations could cost consumers less than a three-star break in the popular Cypriot destination of Larnaca.

Bourgas, Bulgaria, is the cheapest five-star holiday destination for a family break, according to CHIPs.

On average, consumers can enjoy a five-star week-long package holiday, including one meal and a fun day out to a local attraction, for £776.

That’s close to £50 cheaper than the cost of a three-star break in Larnaca (£828) and over £1,000 cheaper per person than a five-star family holiday to the Costa del Sol.

A family of four heading there would spend around £200 less than they would on a three-star stay in Larnaca.

What are the passport rules?

The Sun’s Head of Travel Lisa Minot has explained exactly what Brits need to know.

“Travellers used to be able to roll over up to nine unused months from their old passport onto a new one.

“But post-Brexit, anyone wanting to travel to the EU can no longer rely on those extra months.

“In order to travel to the EU, all passports must be no more than 10 years old on the day you arrive in your European destination.

“And you’ll need at least three months on your passport on the day you head back to the UK.

“Figures have shown up to 100,000 holidaymakers a year face being turned away at airports if their passport is more than 10 years old.

“The 10-year rule only applies to countries in the European Union but every country may have different rules on what is accepted – some countries like South Africa, for example, insist you have at least six months  left on your passport when you travel and a full clear page.”
