Ryan Curran hit the only as Cliftonville started their Premiership campaign with a 1-0 win over newly promoted Portadown at Solitude.
The Reds skipper saw a penalty saved by Aaron McCarey before making amends on 34 minutes.
Rory Donnelly guided the ball across the face of goal and Curran raced in to slot home at the back post.
It was a deserved win for the Irish Cup winners with Portadown offering little threat in north Belfast.
