Former Northern Ireland and Norwich City goalkeeper Michael McGovern has announced his retirement.

The 40-year-old was released by Hearts in May after completing a one-year contract with the Scottish Premiership side and is now head of goalkeeping at Queen’s Park.

McGovern won 32 international caps after making his debut in 2010 and played at the Euro 2016 finals.

He started his career at Celtic in 2001 and his former clubs included Ross County, Falkirk, Hamilton Academicals and a seven-year spell at Norwich.

“New beginnings!! After 23 seasons playing professional football, I have decided to hang up the gloves,” McGovern said on X.

“I’m deeply grateful to all the coaches, team-mates, and fans who have supported me throughout the years.

“A special thank you to my family for all the sacrifices they have made so I could chase my dreams. I look forward to my next adventure as Head of Goalkeeping at Queen’s Park Football Club.”
