Arthur was already 10 years into his prison sentence when a friend put the pair in touch.

They began exchanging letters and having daily phone calls, until they finally met in person, six months later.

Sixth months later, Arthur proposed, and shortly after, the pair got married.

The pair have a one year old child called Zion, and are now expecting their second baby.

Monique also has two other children from a previous relationship.

Due to the laws in their native California, Monique is sometimes allowed to stay overnight at the prison with Arthur.

Talking to Truly TV, she said: “I made sure I planned the visit around my ovulation and sure enough I was successful.

“We just found out we’re pregnant again. So number four is on the way.”

Arthur’s release date is scheduled for 2053, however, Monique is hopeful that he will get let out sooner.

She said: “His first parole date is 2033 so that is a huge possibility that he will be coming home.”

I spent £60k on my husband when he was in prison – people say he’s using me but I know it’s real love

Monique revealed that her family members have doubts about the relationship.

She said: “They think that I’m going to get used when he comes home.”

“Some family members disapprove because they know the victim’s family.”

How do conjugal visits work?

A conjugal visit is a scheduled period where a prisoner is allowed to spend several hours or days in private with a visitor, usually their significant other.

The reason for these visits is to preserve family bonds and increase the chance of success upon the prisoner’s return to ordinary life.

It also acts as an incentive for prisoners to comply with the day to day rules of the prison.

Conjugal visits often take place in a trailer or a small cabin.

They are not currently permitted for UK prisoners.

Monique added that she has also received plenty of online hate from trolls, but isn’t fazed by it.

She said: “I really don’t care about the judgement I receive because I’m so in love, and involved with Arthur – nothing they say matters.”

The mum of four added that her own mother has also had relationships with men behind bars, something she confessed she never understood when she was younger.

Speaking to her mum, she said: “At the time I really didn’t like it or understand it.

“I think when I was younger I always just questioned why you were with somebody in jail and thought you should be with somebody who treats you the way you should be treated.”

However, her mum’s previous relationships haven’t left Monique with any cause for concern.

She said: “It’s the best relationship I have ever been in.

“For those who judge our relationship, I would say don’t judge a book by its cover.”
