DARTS fans have paid tribute to the “wonderful” Tomas Seyler after the shock news that the star had passed away.

The 49-year-old German made three world championship appearances during his career.

And, alongside compatriot Andree Welge, they made history as the first German competitors in the World Darts Championship in 2005.

In addition to his PDC World Championship appearances, the late star also qualified for a trio of European Championships and the 2013 UK Open.

Seyler last competed on the PDC circuit in 2016, but continued to remain active in Germany.

The three-time German national champion then moved into commentary with broadcasters Sport1 and DAZN.

But now supporters have been left reeling after it was announced that Seyler, better known as ‘Shorty’, had died from as-yet confirmed illness.

He was admitted to hospital on June 29 and remained there until he passed away on Thursday.

Seyler’s daughter Tara and fiance Wiebke said in a statement: “Shorty has always met life with humor and charm and has inspired us all with his passion for darts.”

His business partner Sebastian Hielscher wrote: “Deeply saddened to inform you that our Tomas “Shorty” Seyler passed away yesterday.

“After his health collapse on the 29th In June of this year, he could no longer be helped due to the most intense efforts of the doctors.

“His death shakes us deeply and fills a big gap, also in our joint company ‘Shorty Merch’.

“Shorty was my business partner and co-owner but most of all my friend. I miss him very much, we all do.

“Our special sympathies go out to his family, who we all wish strength at this difficult time.”

Sport1 editor-in-chief Michael Langkau said: “Shorty lived for darts – and did pioneering world as an expert with his very own emotional manner.

“Thanks in part to his great commitment and enthusiasm for darts, which has been transferred to his audience, the sport now also captivates millions of spectators in Germany.

“Beyond his work, we will remember Shorty above all as a wonderful person and great guy.”

One heartbroken fan posted on X: “Very sad news that Tomas Seyler has sadly passed away aged 49. A trailblazer for German darts gone too soon.”

A fellow fan commented: “Sad to read about the passing of Tomas Seyler.

“One of the players who helped grow the game of darts in Germany for sure. 49 is no age either. Condolences to his family and friends.”

While former darts player turned coach Paul Nicholson, who won the 2010 Players Championship Finals, also paid tribute to the star.

He posted: “I’ve just heard about the passing of Tomas Seyler. He was only 49. 

“He was always a great chap to be around and had a great sense of humour. We will miss you Shorty.”
