NINTENDO is known for its huge library of family-friendly games, particularly with its co-op-friendly console, the Switch.

Recent Nintendo releases include Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, Luigi’s Mansion 2 and Super Monkey Ball: Banana Rumble, all of which are suitable for adults and kids alike.

Which is why fans were so confused when Nintendo launched a short cryptic trailer for what appears to be a creepy horror title.

The trailer features grainy footage of a man in a suit standing with a paper bag over his head.

On it is a simple drawing of a smiley face with a wide grin, that sometimes transitions to a smaller smile.

At the end, a phrase flashes on the screen in Japanese that reads “smiling man”.

The Japanese text can be seen on all versions of the trailer, even those promoted by Nintendo UK and Nintendo of America for Nintendo Switch.

The video is simply titled Emio, and the description for the video reads #WhoIsEmio.

This is the question on everyone’s lips, as the trailer in no way explains what it is about.

A store page for a game named Emio has also been created but it doesn’t have any information, just a creepy gif of the masked man.

What we do know is that Emio is short for the Japanese translation of “smiling man”, which reads “emiotoko”.

There are rumours that the game will be developed by the Bloober Team, the studio best known for Layers of Fear, which is currently working on the Silent Hill 2 remake.

We know that Bloober Team is currently working on an unannounced survival horror game, which could be Emio.

Nintendo seems happy to leave us with the creepy teaser trailer for now, while everyone tries to figure out who or what Emio is.
