Occasional Digest - a story for you

Drag Race season 15 star Amethyst has come out as a trans woman.

On 6 July, the beloved talent revealed the exciting news in a heartfelt post on her Instagram.

“I want to take a couple of minutes and open up to everyone about some things that have been going on in my personal life. The truth is, I’ve been struggling severely with my gender dysphoria more than ever in recent months,” she explained via handwritten journal entry.

“It’s something that I’ve always concealed in the back of my mind, and, through the years, has slowly crept its way to the front. Last year was when things really started to hit me hard, and this mental warfare has really just escalated since then.”

Amethyst went on to say that her internal struggle was “eating away” at her and impacted all aspects of her life, including her thoughts, relationships, confidence and sense of self.

Fortunately, the Connecticut-based talent was able to push through the inner turmoil and fully step into her trans identity.

“I wanted to let you all know that I’m trans and began HRT a little over a month ago. Even in this short amount of time, the comparison to how I felt just a few months ago is night and day. It’s a different sense of happiness that is slowly but surely bringing back my self-assurance, and every day, it gets easier to look in the mirror.”

Elsewhere in her statement, the 29-year-old gushed about her chosen family, thanking them for their endless support throughout her transition.

While her journey has been full of love and support, Amethyst revealed that her affirmation journey hasn’t been free from financial roadblocks – adding that her insurance either doesn’t cover the price of her gender-affirming procedures or only covers a fraction of the cost.

“As someone who has always been independent since I was a kid, asking for help isn’t something that’s super easy for me,” she said.

“But unfortunately, my current financial situation doesn’t really leave me any other option, so I’m going to start raising some funds for my FFS, if anyone would like to help make this affordable to me.”

Toward the end of her heartfelt statement, the talented performer revealed that she would be going as Amy out of the drag, which she credited to her Drag Race season 15 sister, Malaysia Babydoll Foxx.

“I know it’s somewhat reminiscent of my drag name, but true story – [Malaysia] was the first one to call me that, and the first time she did, I had a little lightbulb over the head moment,” she said.

“I don’t know… I feel a lot of pressure to pick the “perfect” name, but in the meantime, this is a comfy placeholder for me. I appreciate you all so so so much, and your support means the world to me.”

Shortly after uploading her statement, fans flocked to the comment section to shower Amethyst with congratulatory messages.

One fan wrote: “Love u!!! Thank you for letting us in to such a special moment.”

Another user commented: “So so happy that ur getting to know urself and that ur loving her as much as we do.”

Amethyst also received support from an array of her Drag Race sisters, like Sasha Colby, who wrote “Love you” alongside a series of pink, blue and white heart emojis.

Princess Poppy and Malaysia echoed similar sentiments, with the former writing, “I love you so much,” and the latter commenting, “AMY WE LOVE YOU!”

We can’t wait to see Amethyst thrive throughout her ongoing transition.
