Occasional Digest - a story for you

ON THE HUNT for a budget-friendly mobile? I’ve spotted a great deal on a no-frills Android device.

Fonehouse is offering the Samsung Galaxy A14 and 300GB of data for just £14 a month – you’ll pay nothing upfront.

I spotted this super-cheap phone deal on the provider’s Payday Sale deals page.

Reliable, no-nonsense budget mobiles often slip under the radar, especially with brand-new flagship phone released by the likes of Apple and Samsung getting all the limelight.

But there are some decent, affordable Android handsets out there for anybody on a tight spend.

The Korean tech giant Samsung has built a solid reputation for providing high-quality affordable Android devices without a price tag that’s going to empty the bank.

Every year, to accompany the launch of the flagship S series, Samsung releases the extremely affordable A series for those who want a solid phone without the extras.

It’s worth noting that the Galaxy A14 is Samsung’s release from 2023 – it was succeeded by the Galaxy A15 earlier this year (itself currently on sale at Amazon).

However, despite it being a generation, the A14 is still a fab-looking budget device.

You get a sizeable 6.6-inch screen, so no squinting to make out text, and more than enough space to enjoy the latest episode of The Boys while on the go.

A big screen wouldn’t be much good without a battery to match.

Fortunately, the A14 is equipped with a 5,000mAh battery: that’s the largest Samsung currently fit its devices with.

This means you’ve got a device that will last as long as you do, and you won’t have to plug it into life support every few hours.

One fan on Amazon even notes that ‘the battery life is brilliant’, so there’s nothing to worry about there.

The added bow on top is the 50-megapixel rear camera, which you might compare against the iPhone 15’s 48-megapixel rear camera.

So, despite the much lower price tag, you’re still getting top-notch tech, but as you may have realised, you won’t be getting all the fancy features you’d expect from a flagship device.

Another Amazon customer states: ‘I bought this as [I was] fed up with paying hundreds for previous phones.

‘This does [exactly] the same. The screen is good and a bit larger… Ì like it better than the previous phones I’ve had.’

Samsung isn’t the only provider of great affordable devices, as Google also releases an affordable counterpart every year.

In fact, I’ve pitted the two tech giants’ budget-friendly devices against each other in my Samsung Galaxy A14 vs Google Pixel 6a explainer.

If you’re on the fence or the A14 doesn’t quite fit your needs, the Pixel 6a may be a better match – but interestingly, there are two standout deals out there from a brand you might not have been realised was still on the market.

Last week, I spotted a ‘mega cheap’ Motorola Moto G04 deal with 5GB of data for just £8 per month and £29 upfront.

There’s even something for those wanting to purchase a phone outright, as Amazon cut the Motorola Moto G84 from £249.99 to just £179.
