If there’s one thing you can’t choose in life, it’s your name – and for those unfortunate few, it’s not ideal when you don’t suit your name or simply don’t like it.
It’s not uncommon for people to change their names when they reach adulthood – and one Reddit user has revealed that’s exactly what she’s considering doing after being made fun of her entire life.
Her parents named her Ethereal, which, according to the Oxford dictionary, means something “extremely light and beautiful; seemingly to belong to another, more spiritual world”.
Sharing her woes, she took to the social media website to explain: “My name is Ethereal. Yes, Ethereal. Growing up teachers would always giggle when they heard it and it made me feel self conscious so I went by Ethy for the most part.”
Ethy then recounted a memory from middle school, where her name was one of their “vocab words” and all her fellow classmates laughed, too.
“I asked my parents why they named me an adjective and my mom said she loves the meaning and pronunciation,” she continued.
While in her personal and professional life, people still call her by her nickname Ethy, she’s been “considering changing it to that legally”.
She added: “Ethereal is just too much.
“I’m too introverted for that name.”
Reddit users were keen to share their thoughts in the comments, as many sympathised with what she’s been through.
One person wrote: “That’s an interesting name, although I’m sorry for your experience.
“Thanks for sharing, it’s a good reminder for me to rein it in a little when looking at unique names for future kids.
“I do really like Ethy as a nickname, though”.
Another shared that her story was enlightened as they “wanted to name” their future child when she was just 16 years old.
