The Constitution of Turkmenistan was adopted on 18 May 1992. It is the supreme law of Turkmenistan.
The Constitution emphasises self-determination for the Turkmen people, as well as the rule of law and rights for citizens.
Since its adoption in 1992, the Constitution has been reviewed seven times: in 1995, 1995, 1999, 2003, 2005 and 2006, as well as in 2008 and 2016.
The day is marked by a ceremony to lay spring flowers at the Monument to the Constitution in Ashgabat, the Turkmen capital. Other events to commemorate the day include a concert and poetry evenings.
The poetry evenings are fitting as a Day of Revival, Unity and Poetry of Magtymguly Pyragy is also celebrated in Turkmenistan on May 18.
Magtymguly was a Turkmen spiritual leader and philosophical poet, who was born on 18 May 1724. He made significant efforts to secure independence and autonomy for his people in the 18th century.
