High profile Perth bikie Troy Mercanti has been released on bail after spending the weekend behind bars on serious sexual assault charges, with police revealing more charges could follow.

Police arrested Mercanti after a home owned by his mother in the northern Perth suburb of Karrinyup was searched last week.

He was charged with two counts of sexual penetration without consent, one count of aggravated sexual penetration without consent and one count of common assault.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Chris Evans told the Perth Magistrates Court on Monday the alleged sexual assault occurred between noon and 1pm on Thursday, after Mercanti had spent the previous night consuming alcohol and drugs, including cocaine.

More assaults alleged

Following publicity surrounding Mercanti’s arrest last week, the court was told a second woman had since come forward to police with more sexual assault  allegations against Mercanti.

An investigation into those allegations is now underway.

Mercanti appeared in court from Hakea Prison via video link, with his lawyer Paul Holmes telling the court his client strenuously denied the charges and requested he be released on bail.

Mr Holmes said Mercanti did not have a history of breaching bail conditions and he would otherwise have to remain behind bars until his trial, which would not take place for some time.

Concerns for alleged victim

Prosecutors opposed bail, with Mr Evans saying he was “highly concerned” Mercanti would influence potential witnesses or coerce the alleged victim if released.

Mr Evans told the court the woman had been receiving threatening messages on social media from members of the Mongols outlaw motorcycle gang, of which Mercanti was a senior member.

Mr Evans said she told police: “This is the end of me, I’m going to be killed.”

But Magistrate Andrew Matthews approved the bail application with a $100,000 surety and strict reporting conditions.

Mercanti is also prohibited from contacting the alleged victim.

He is due to appear in court again in July.
