April 29 (UPI) — Police in Charlotte, N.C., on Monday said “numerous” law enforcement personnel were struck by gunfire in the city as initial reports indicated a U.S. Marshal was killed in the incident.

A Marshals task force comprised of officers from multiple agencies came under gunfire from the “subject” of an investigation in the 5000 block of Galway Drive, a residential area located about 6 miles east of downtown Charlotte, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department said in a social media post at 1:44 p.m. EDT.

“Multiple law enforcement officers have been struck by the gunfire and are being transported to the hospital,” they said.

Monday afternoon, ABC News reported that police said one suspect was “located deceased at the residence,” but no other details were released.

Roads in that part of Charlotte were blocked to allow ambulance traffic to quickly access the area, police said.

A media briefing will be held “as soon as the situation stabilizes,” they added.

Sources told WSOC-TV that a U.S. Marshal was killed during the gunfire, while two officers were shot in their legs and another was shot in the chest.

The broadcaster said several schools in the area were put on modified lockdowns during the incident.

North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper said he is “in contact with law enforcement concerning the tragic shooting in the Charlotte area, and we have offered state resources to help.”
