April 27 (UPI) — Former movie mogul Harvey Weinstein was hospitalized Saturday for a battery of tests days after New York’s highest court overturned his 2020 rape conviction, his attorney said.

The 72-year-old disgraced Hollywood producer was taken to Bellevue Hospital in Manhattan for testing after doctors examined him at Rikers Island jail Friday, attorney Arthur Aidala said in a statement issued to media outlets.

“He’s got a lot of problems,” Aidala said. “He’s getting all kinds of tests. He’s somewhat of a train wreck health wise.”

Aidala said Weinstein’s ailments are “physical” and that mentally, he his “sharp as a tack” and has ” feet firmly planted on the ground.”

The hospitalization came after Weinstein was transferred from Mohawk Correctional Facility in upstate New York to a medical ward at Rikers in New York City on Friday. He was scheduled to appear in court next week for a retrial after the New York Court of Appeals on Thursday overturned his 2020 rape conviction.

Weinstein was serving a 23-year prison sentence at Mohawk after he was found guilty of first-degree rape, a first-degree criminal sexual act and a third-degree rape.

The court in a 4-3 ruling determined the judge in that case improperly allowed testimony and evidence against Weinstein that was “irrelevant” and “prejudicial” to the charges against him.

Aidala on Saturday said Weinstein was “not treated well,” adding “they refused to give him even a sip of water, no food, no bathroom break. He’s a 72-year-old sickly man.”

Juda Engelmayer, a spokesperson for Weinstein, said “we’re cautiously excited” by the court’s decision to overturn the ruling.

“He still has a long road ahead of him because of the Los Angeles case. We are studying the ramifications of the appeal right now,” Engelmayer said.

Weinstein still is serving a 16-year prison sentence in California, where he was sentenced in 2023 on separate rape charges.
