Occasional Digest - a story for you

FANS and players alike of The 1% Club were left stumped by the show’s ‘hardest ever question’.

The quiz has been hosted by comedian and Would I Lie To You panellist Lee Mack since 2022.

Rather than testing trivia knowledge, the show challenges contestants’ logic and deductive thinking.

Before each show, a group of 1,000 people are tasked with answering the same questions as the players.

The number who answer each question correctly helps decide the brain teaser’s level of difficulty.

Each episode begins with a question known by 90% of the 1,000 and ends with the trickiest of all, which only 1% answered correctly.

The latest episode featured a question which stumped not just contestants in the studio, but also viewers watching at home.

It was a question known by just 10% of the 1,000, meaning this was in the game’s latter stages.

The query went as follows: “Edna’s birthday is on the 6th of April and Jen’s birthday falls on the 15th of October, therefore Amir’s birthday must be the ‘X’ of January.”

So, what’s the ever-elusive solution? Stop reading now if you need some time to figure it out, as the answer is below.

It turns out the conundrum links the numbers with its position in the sentence, so 6th is the sixth word and 15th is the fifteenth word.

Therefore, Amir’s birthday is January 24th, corresponding to the 24th word in the sentence.

The 1% Club breaks ITV records with ‘stupid’ question – but can you pass Lee Mack’s test?

Since The 1% Club’s launch, the show has become a firm favourite quiz.

Lee Mack has confirmed he will be hosting more episodes of the hit show, although his long-running sitcom Not Going Out will be taking a break.

The BBC hit is due to return in 2025 at the earliest after the hiatus.
