While it often does feature guest interviews and entertainment related items, viewers of the programme this morning could not help but be left baffled by just how long a segment on the broadcaster’s very own drama Blue Lights went on for.

On the programme, usual hosts Jon Kay and Sally Nugent were holding court over proceedings on the red sofa as they welcomed two of the programme’s stars to chat all about the latest series.

Actress Sian Brooke appeared over the moon to be talking about the programme as she gushed about “explosive” twists and turns still to come as she sat alongside co-star Nathan Braniff.

Blue Lights launched on the BBC last year and is currently airing its second series after receiving a positive fan reception.

However, the reception was particularly less welcoming by BBC Breakfast fans.

Viewers of the programme were left aghast by the Beeb’s decision to devote a whole slot to advertising the show as opposed to focusing on the day’s top headlines.

It spurred a whole host of comments on X – formerly Twitter – where fans were quick to bash the show.

As some were also left angry that the BBC News channel was also carrying the item as part of its simulcast with BBC One in the morning.

One fan said: “BBC’s dedicated news channel showing a 12 minute advert for a slightly c***py police drama.”

Another scoffed: “#BBCBreakfast the light entertainment show giving you hours of family fun discussing the BBC’s own programmes. Current affairs? News? Pah.”

As someone else commented: “Not another ‘cop drama’? BBC ‘Drama’ seems to turn them out like sausages. #bbcbreakfast.”

The outrage on the BBC show comes after fans were recently left worried by the continuing absence of 54 year old host Jon Kay.

Although hosting this morning and appearing on shows last week, Jon had caused concern after failing to appear as usual on the show and did not address the time off.

However, fans were relived to discover the star was simply on holiday as he broke his social media silence in a bid to re-assure viewers.

The journalist told fans he had spent a few days in picturesque Cornwall.
