Police have shot a 42-year-old man who they believe to have fatally stabbed another man near Gympie on Friday.

Police were called to the property on Running Creek Road at Kilkivan shortly after 3pm after reports of a fight between two men, in which a 55-year-old man was stabbed.

He died at the scene of his injuries.

Acting Superintendent Paul Algie said the 42-year-old threatened officers with a knife before he was shot.

“The police officer attempted to negotiate with the offender for a brief period and retreated back behind his police vehicle and then across the road from the incident address,” Acting Superintendent Algie said.

“As a result of this interaction between the police officer and the male person, the police officer fired one shot from his service firearm, struck the male offender, and he went to the ground.”

Acting Superintendent Algie said the officer then gave first aid.

The man was airlifted to the Sunshine Coast University Hospital with critical injuries.

The relationship between the two men is still being investigated.

Acting Superintendent Algie said no officer was injured.

He said the officer who fired the shot was an experienced officer he knew personally and had spoken to that night.

“He’s a senior constable with over 10 years’ experience,” Acting Superintendent Algie said.

“This is the worst situation that any police officer can be confronted with in their career … It is the worst possible job a police officer can attend.”

The shooting will be investigated by the Ethical Standards Command.
