Occasional Digest - a story for you

A CLEANING fan has warned laundry novices against a major mistake that left stains in clothes for good.

Instead, they shared alternatives that gently lifted the stains if a wash didn’t do the trick.

Redditor TeaspoonMoon shared the cleaning tricks in a post.

They explained that a common mistake they see is what people do when their attempts to wash out stains fail.

“The most basic thing is, if a stain doesn’t come out in the wash, do NOT toss it in the dryer,” they said.

“If you’re washing something with a stain do NOT wash in hot water. Heat will set a stain and basically make it impossible to get out.”

Instead, they opted for hydrogen peroxide to remove tough stains.

“It’s great for protein and plant-based stains so think blood, fruit, grass, etc,” they said.

While the peroxide was great on white clothing, they warned that it may not lift well or leave residue on darker fabrics.

“If you’re using on something non-white, test with a Q-tip in a hidden place,” they said.

For grease and oil stains, they turned to Dawn dish soap instead of hydrogen peroxide.

A fail-proof technique even came in handy when all else failed.

I perfected my 3-ingredient DIY laundry detergent by making a key swap – now it won’t harden the water & it smells great

“When in doubt, mixing in some Oxi-clean with cool water in a bucket or sink and letting a garment soak is usually a good first step for stains,” they explained.

For all their other laundry needs, they simply turned to all-knowing experts, AKA the Internet.

“Basically every possible thing that could stain your clothes, someone has done the same and has asked the internet and the internet has delivered,” they said.

“I honestly don’t bother memorizing all the wives’ tale remedies as Google is fast and takes up zero brain space.”

Other laundry-goers shared the remedies that worked for them.

Redditor Joe_Primrose explained that they carried around a quick solution in case of emergency.

“Common stains like tomato sauce, salad oil… Get some Shout stain remover,” they recommended.

“Spray and work into the stain, let it work for at least 15 minutes. If you use a laundromat, treat the stains before you leave the house so you’re not waiting.

“Others report having good luck pre-treating similar stains with either liquid dish soap or liquid laundry detergent.”

Whatever product you used, Joe recommended using the same technique for the full effect.

“Work it in, let work for awhile,” they said.
