One couple, however, may have taken the saying a bit too literally.
Redditor OneShorts was horrified by what went down at her sister’s wedding.
She explained that the ceremony was full of “red flags” and ended up with the couple in handcuffs.
Her sister, a 24-year-old with a five-year-old from a previous relationship, was marrying a man 16 years her senior.
Although the groom was 40, the Redditor noted his childish behavior, which came to a head every time the wedding’s finances came up.
“My father and stepmother offered $5,000 for the wedding [but] my mother and stepfather were unable to contribute financially,” she explained.
“At the rehearsal dinner, the venue manager came to collect final payment and the groom said ‘Go talk to him over there with the checkbook,’ meaning my father.”
When her dad handed over a check for $5,000, the groom remained displeased.
“The groom flips out saying my ‘cheapskate’ father needs to cough up the other half to account for my mom’s portion,” she said.
“At this, my dad just laughed and walked away.”
The debacle over the venue fees leads to a fight between the bride, groom, and her father.
After all members of the family had calmed down, the venue manager agreed to collect the final payment on the day of the wedding.
Upon her arrival at the church, she learned that the groom had already been drinking.
At a separate location to take their bridal photos, she revealed that the groom ran into another bridal party before their photos were done.
“Yes, he ran into their photos leaving his bride alone in their car,” she said.
The groom overheard this and came over, took a quarter out of his pocket (why he had this, no clue), and threw it at my father saying, ‘Take this, you must need it and it’s all you’re worth.’

During the cake-cutting, he continued acting aggressively.
“You guessed it, he smashed aggressively in my sister’s face and got it on her dress,” she said.
“Then for the garter removal, he was doing the whole show of going up her dress, ducking his head in, while she continuously protested.
“This led to my brother grabbing a chair, walking to the table closest to this happening, and slamming it down to sit aggressively, showing he was watching and not pleased.
“After this, all hell broke loose.”
The venue manager had arrived to collect his payment as promised and the groom, once again, pointed to her father and then walked away “to hit on my cousin’s wife.”
“My dad told the manager ‘Sorry, I owe you nothing, you signed a contract with him, I don’t know where he got this idea from.'”
“The groom overheard this and came over, took a quarter out of his pocket (why he had this, no clue), and threw it at my father saying ‘Take this, you must need it and it’s all you’re worth.'”
I later become friends with the daughter of the caterer, who told me her father still talks about that as the Jerry Springer wedding.

“The cousin whose wife was hit on lunged at the groom, calling him a piece of s**t. Some other cousins got involved, telling the groom to back off and just move on from his notion of my father paying.
“He told them to f**k off so my entire family did just that, got up and left. Literally half of the hall just emptied out in five minutes.”
Exasperated, the venue manager made a call to the police to collect his money.
“My sister and her husband were in handcuffs negotiating a payment plan with the venue,” she said.
“I later become friends with the daughter of the caterer, who told me her father still talks about that as the Jerry Springer wedding, and he never was fully paid.
“What’s ironic is my brother was married at the same hall a few years prior and their photos were part of the collection shown to couples as examples of the events held there, then my sister has this go down.
“The marriage lasted a surprising 3 years before she left him.”
People were shocked that her sister continued to marry him despite his behavior.
“It’s wild to me that the flags can be THAT big and people still can’t see ‘em!” said one commenter.
“She had all the warnings not to marry him. I hope your sister is in a better place at least for her son’s sake,” said another.
